Waihi Walkways intends that its track standards meet the design requirements of the Standards New Zealand guidelines (SNZ HB 8630:2004).

The Standards Handbook identifies six user groups, and sets out track standards for these groups. The groups are:

Visitor group Track classification
Urban Residents Path
Short Stop Travellers Short Walk
Day Visitors Walking Track
Backcountry Comfort Seekers Easy Tramping Track
Backcountry Adventurers Tramping Track
Remoteness Seekers Route

Short Stop Travellers and Day Visitors are the groups identified as the visitor groups most likely to be using our walkways. Our track specifications will meet or exceed these requirements.

Short Walk

Well formed. Up to 1 hour's easy walking (return). Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. All watercourses are bridged. Some may cater for people with mobility difficulties.

Walking Track

An extended walk that takes from a few minutes to a full day return. Suitable for relatively inexperienced people with a low level of backcountry skill. All but the smallest watercourses are bridged.
