In 2009, Hauraki District Council adopted the first draft of a Walking and Cycling Strategy for the district.

"The strategy is to see how we can make Hauraki District a safe and friendly place to walk and cycle both for our communities and for visitors. The strategy’s objectives are:

bulletTo establish walking and cycling as a viable mode of transport in Hauraki District
bulletTo reduce the number of short car trips
bulletTo enhance public health and fitness and tourism
bulletTo reduce the adverse environmental effects from land transport"
