Waihi's Walkways

Go Waihi's walkway committee has been very active and is preparing to provide an interesting and scenic selection of walks around the town. We reported a few weeks ago on a request from it for extra land to be retained as a reserve at the end of Lawrence Rd. Council felt that the already substantial area of land which includes some historic ruins was sufficient to provide a beautiful picnic area and that any more would present a maintenance problem in the future. While Council considered it had come to an amicable agreement with the committee by increasing the reserve area slightly, the Ward Committee was told at its last meeting that the Walkways Committee has not accepted the decision and is wanting Council to revisit the matter.

A request from the committee for funding towards the development of the walkways has been held over until the land issue has been settled and because council has already committed funding to the committee for specific projects. A further request for the use of the bridge that was removed from the goat track was declined on the grounds that the bridge is not safe and would not be worthy of trying to reinstate in another place. The reason that it was replaced is that it was in an unsafe condition and not considered repairable.
