Waihi Leader 4 May 2010 Walk planned for milestone celebrationWaihi Walkways turns 10 this year – and the society is inviting members of the public to celebrate the milestone with a "walk through the walkways" this Sunday. Participants will meet a the Waihi netball courts car park in Kenny St at 10am, and foot it to Coffeys Creek Reserve in Wellington St, stopping to plant a tree on the way. The grade is easy, but not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, says Waihi Walkways coordinator Ruth Ordish. There’ll be a choice of returning via the same route, or exiting the walk at Wellington St, Riverbank Tce, Gilmour Reserve or Clarke St. Back at the car park, free kowhai trees will be available for walkers to plant in their neighbourhoods. Waihi Walkways was incorporated in July 2000, after a working group was formed in late 1998 to develop and promote existing and new walking links in the district. The first major focus was the Mill Stream Walkways, over DOC-owned mining heritage land that had been buried by weeds. Other projects have included the Riverbank Terrace Walkway, Coffeys Walk and Silverton Walk. |
